Plastic Man

Su Yu-Hsien

Uncle Mao is one of the people of this world who live in landfill sites, surviving by collecting and recycling the waste of others. He and his family specialise in plastics, which they sort according to percussive qualities. Highly skilled experts in the acoustic properties of plastics, they are able to divine a discarded scrap’s potential for recycling – and hence is economic value – from a simple tap. Su Yu-Hsien composed this absurdist concert to be performed by Mao and his family; an ode to humanity’s capacity for beauty, resourcefulness and wit, even in the midst of its own detritus.
